'fact power' vs. the subconcious
came across this 1950's ad for computers. I love the idea of a fact powered machine, a fact powered life.
But 'fact power' ignores the power of the irrational in the daily governance of our lives. David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) posts this brilliant illustration on the power of the subconscious. The monkey is our conscious rational mind, barking its commands at the world. Unwitingly it rides the tiger of our somewhat less rational subconscious.

this site creates global maps of the world where the size of the nation represents its importance or development against a given variable. So if they produced a world atlas of irony, the USA would be the size of the isle of white. clever, useful site.
if the world was a village. Whereas this site starts from the premise that there are 100 people in the world (the size of a village) and then outlines the distribution of power, health and happiness in that village. An incredibly literal but powerful way of presenting percentages to make them real.
